As summer comes to an end often we feel it’s time to “get back to work.” The time for fun and play is over. But fun and play can add energy to your life all year ’round. It seems fun is usually fit in when we have finished our work. And we never seem to finish our work so we rarely allow ourselves to play. It’s time to plan for play. Planning for Play: Find three fun activities or events in the weekend paper you’d like to attend and plan to do at least one.

A number of people have asked me to write about my new herbal adventures more, and I’ve resolved to do so. I haven’t forgotten about writing about the big questions (more to say still on the middle ground between Kingsnorth and Monbiot), but I did want to answer those who have been querying me about teas and tinctures.

Ben with the Sage Yesterday my son and I harvested some of the herb garden. The sage, thyme, rosemary, and spearmint were all ready to be picked. Ben was particularly enthused about the mint when he realized we could make a tea that he even he could drink during the winter months. He’s been chewing leaves throughout the summer so he’s grown quite fond of the taste. While we were processing the leaves we had picked, my thoughts revolved around building memories.

In order to begin to move forward, I must figure out where it is I want to go.We have already decided that we want to be closer to my significant other. North County. We like it there. I have always liked it there; I have always preferred North County to anywhere else in the area. There are plenty of places to go, wilderness speaking, right in the heart of things there. This is what I need. It is also close to where my son lives with his father, so we have that angle covered.

Last fall, I cleared the quick-growing weeds and rocks out of my newly-built herb garden. All my actual herbs were in pots on the back deck, as usual. Since I had so much empty space and wanted to get my poor plants through the winter intact, I carefully buried them up to their throats in soft black soil and vowed to dig them back up come springtime. The plants included thyme and several varieties of mint. Yes, I can hear you laughing through your modem.

August is one of my favorite times of year. Here in Minneapolis, MN, the rowan tree in my back garden is full of brilliant orange berries. My hawthorn tree is laden with haws, the fruit of the whitethorn, turning from green to pink on their way to deep crimson. The bees are ecstatically harvesting the nectar from my hissop flowers. I have a few tomatoes ripening on the vines amid the other curious plants in my herb patch. I am nurturing a Scarlet Firethorn and a variety of winter-hardy holly
