Behold the fruits of my labor! Lunch: Tomatoes and flowers are from the garden. I’m in between lettuce crops at the moment — l’m still learning how to space out the crops properly, so this lettuce is store-bought. The tomato is the Patio variety, which I grow in large pots on my deck, which is the sunniest part of the yard. I’m also growing, for the first time, two Brandywine plants in the ground, but today is the first day I spotted tiny green tomatoes on the plants — there will be dozens, if they make it.

SUMMERTIME HERBS The summer months are a great time to pick, use and dry herbs. Herbs are easy to propagate and grow and you don’t need a big space. Even if you are living in a flat or apartment you can have windowsill planters filled with these useful plants. We always have herbs in our garden, a lot of them are disguised as weeds. They attract the insects, grow in poor soil, are easy to look after and add colour, life and fragrance to the garden. They can be used in cooking, for cosmetic and medicinal purposes.

OK, not really. Remember Lt. Dan? The guy who made the barbecue that Terry loved so much? He’s a great guy– he and his wife, Sheilah, are some of my favorite people. Strangely enough, we met before we actually met– I distinctly remember talking to him and Murphy in line at Bockfest two years ago, the year we had the huge snow and the only people there were folks from the neighborhood. He and his crew drove down from Monroe just to do Bockfest! We actually attended with him and Sheilah this year.

I woke up this morning, a little groggy because CJ called at 10:30, in a weeping panic because apparently the computer chip in his truck was fried thanks to him not disconnecting the negative terminal on his battery before welding the exhaust pipe back on. But then, he knows more about all that shi…er…stuff than the rest of us do. Terry gave him groggy directions for resetting the chip, listened to CJ tell him he was wrong, and we both went back to sleep. At 11:30 CJ called again (do you *KNOW* what time it is? I asked.

Gayle Schmidt is Manager of Public Education. Imagine relaxing in a big backyard, enjoying a summer evening with friends along with good food, good music, and beautiful surroundings. Well, you can do that right here at the Botanical Garden. On the next three Thursday nights beginning tomorrow, we continue our Edible Evenings series with a special addition—the Waterlily Concert series. These evenings are so fantastic, with great talent and friendly company to share in the event.

With just a little more than two weeks to go before more than 40 poets descend on the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts, the anticipation is splitting my seams. The dashingly bearded AF Harrold is one of the poets who I am dying to see take the QPF stage. To get a glimpse of the poetry that travels with him, I asked him which poems he would take to a Desert(ed) Island. So raise your anchor and let these poems carry you one sleep closer to QPF 2009 .

It seems that every so often–sometimes longer, sometimes shorter–I find it necessary to step back and refocus. People who don’t know me very well laugh when I give them my standard self-description: tall, blonde, and easily distracted. “Easily distracted?” they say, “You read huge books in one sitting!” As if that’s the pinnacle of focus and attention. Seriously, people, I read books in one sitting (or as close as I can get) because if I don’t, I’ll get distracted , put it down and more than likely forget I ever intended to finish it.
